Welcome to the Website of Local 1796 UAW Region 1 Wayne County Community College District
Local 1796 was formed in 1971 on a vote of the regular full-time office, clerical and technical support staff employees and the regular part-time office, clerical and technical support staff employees . The Local's first Collective Bargaining Agreement became effective September 27, 1972 and was meant to give social and economic justice and a voice for the membership in the work place.
HELLO! My name is Marie Turner and I'm the newly elected President of Local 1796 I have been a proactive union member here at Wayne County Community College District for approximately 16 years. I have previously served the membership for over 14 years in the following positions:
As Trustee, I conducted local union audits and oversaw union financial business.
As Steward, I was responsible for members on my floor or at the campus location. I assisted members with employee management relations. I investigated and filed grievances for members on union information issues and their personal-employment relations.
I am also a Professional Counselor with experience providing individual, group, career and person counseling. I'm trained in providing crisis intervention and personal/family aid. I have also participated in workshops, orientations and trainings held by the International Union. During one of my trainings I accepted the following:

Campus Union Steward and most recently as Union Trustee 1997 - Present

I will do my best to support and strengthen the Community Services Programs in my local union and the labor movement. I will forever seek increased knowledge and understanding to better serve the needs of my union and the community in which I live.
